Jeremy M. Joseph is an Advocate & Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya. He has a Masters degree in maritime law from the University of Southampton and is a recipient of the prestigious British High Commissioner’s Chevening Scholarship award. In 1998, he started his legal career at the Singapore office of Holman Fenwick & Willan, as an Associate handling shipping and insurance cases. In 2002, he set up Messrs Joseph & Partners in Kuala Lumpur and has grown it to be a leading shipping law firm in Malaysia. The firm has been acknowledged by Legal 500 in 2009 to have an "impressive client list." Jeremy frequently acts as counsel in various shipping and insurance cases and some have become important case authorities and precedents in Malaysia. He currently advises shipowners, P&I Clubs, banks, charterers, insurers, hotel owners and operators, airlines and cargo carriers and other commercial parties. He has written numerous articles that have been published in leading law journals and authored and co-authored the 'Shipping, Insurance and Carriers volumes of Halsbury’s Laws of Malaysia'. In 2008, he was appointed as Chairman of the Shipping & Admiralty Committee, for the Malaysian Bar. Jeremy regularly speaks at seminars and conferences on shipping, insurance and hospitality law. Melanie M. Pillai obtained an Honours degree in law from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, United Kingdom in 1998 . She was admitted and enrolled as an Advocate & Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in 2001. In a previous firm she was practising as a legal assistant and due to her diligence and level of commitment in the said firm, she was subsequently made an equity partner and was put in charge of handling the conveyancing department where her key client was a prominent developer. Apart from conveyancing matters, Melanie also has litigation experience in banking matters, accident cases and criminal matters and non-contentious divorce matters. In the unreported judgment of Soon Hai Kee Shipping Sdn Bhd v Tokio Marine Insurans (Malaysia) Berhad released in April 2010 , the Kuching High Court basically concluded that the plain words of an express warranty contained in the usual marine policies did not aid insurers despite clear evidence that the master of the vessel did not possess a re-validated Certificate of Competency under the Merchant Shipping (Training and Certification) Rules 1999, which were made in order to comply with the country's obligations under the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers 1978 and 1995.
