It is a fact that the carriage of goods by sea is the cheapest way to transport goods between trading nations. One of the reasons for this is because freight and insurance cover can be obtained at relatively competitive rates. However, the risk of transporting such goods is very high. The exposure to maritime perils during the voyage threatens the safety of the goods and invites potential liabilities in respect of loss or damage to the goods. In such circumstances, usually it is the carrier who would be prima facie liable for loss or damage to the goods during the sea voyage.
