At the end of 1998, the Maritime Department recorded 3,001 Malaysian registered vessels with a combined total of 5,864,750 gross tonnage (‘GRT’) as compared to 433 vessels (733,225 GRT) in 1982, reflecting the impressive economic growth enjoyed by the country in the last decade. Despite this significant growth, the figures today only represent 17% of Malaysian vessels carrying international cargo. The expansion of the Malaysian fleet through ship registration will ultimately reduce reliance on foreign vessels and the services account deficit. This article will briefly cover the registration of ships and mortgages in Malaysia.
